You’ll have often heard people saying what essential items they would want to have should they ever be stranded on a desert island. Whilst this scenario is incredibly unlikely, we seem fascinated by the prospect with numerous TV series, classic books and movies all exploring the idea. Never mind the essentials, being stuck on a deserted island is going to get pretty boring after a while so here are some ideas for ways to keep yourself busy while you await rescue:

#1 Coconut Games

The wonderful coconut – not only will it quench your thirst but this husky fruit will also provide hours of ridiculous entertainment! Climbing the palm trees will be your first challenge but once you’ve mastered that, then you can start with coconut bowling, coconut shy with rocks, pass the coconut (if you have fellow stranded passengers) and how far can you throw a coconut? You get the idea, whatever you can do with a coconut!

#2 Books

In this imaginary scenario, we’ll assume that we have been conveniently stranded with our luggage. Remember to pack some extensive reading material as you might be there for some time. Some great classics will keep you entertained for hours – how about War and Peace or Treasure Island? What would be your ideal book to settle down with in a hammock?

#3 Music

Imagine having a solar powered music player with you. What would be your ideal playlist for a long stay in a remote place? Having your favorite music to listen to on a device that would never run out of charge would be bliss and certainly good for killing some time. You might not have a hairbrush for a microphone but at least there’ll be no neighbors banging on the wall either.

#4 Hopscotch

All that sand is just asking for a game of hopscotch. Grab a stick, draw out the lines that you drew a thousand times as a kid and get playing. If you’re not on your own on the island then what better time to hold a tic, tac, toe championship? Seriously, you’ve got nothing better to do so why not?

#5 Just Sing

Singing keeps your spirits up so psychologically, this is a great activity for a long stay on a desert island. There are also many health benefits to singing as it’s an aerobic exercise and good for the heart. What better time to belt out some classic tunes and listen to your voice echoing around the island? It’s also a fun way to reduce stress and nobody will hear your bum notes!

#6 Trying to be Rescued

Depending on what ingenious ways you come up with to attract attention, this could be quite entertaining. Building a huge beacon to set on fire will take time and preparation. Just make sure you don’t burn down the entire island! Gather up as many shells as you can and create a giant SOS sign in the sand. Make a bonfire, make some flags or send out messages in bottles!

#7 Swimming

If you can establish that there’s nothing in the water that can kill you, then spend your days perfecting every single swimming stroke. The sparkling, warm turquoise waters will not only be a life-saving source of fresh fish but your key to staying fit, healthy and refreshed away from the heat of the sun.

#8 Making Your Own Supplies

Have fun scouring the island for materials to make your existence more comfortable. Find the softest leaves for toilet paper! You seriously don’t want to be wiping your delicates with any old nettles. You’ll also want to think about making a comfy bed, a storage cupboard for all your coconut shells and maybe some tropical flowers to add a homely touch to your island hut décor!

#9 Fruit Picking

You need to feed yourself but there is no reason this can’t be fun too. Depending on where you might be in the world (and chances are you’ll have no idea) you could find bananas, papaya, mangoes, star fruit and a whole host of berries. Unless you’re some kind of survivalist expert, it’s probably best to avoid anything that you don’t immediately recognise!

#10 Go Fishing

If you can fashion yourself some kind of net or sharpen a stick to use as a spear then you can have hours of fun trying to catch your supper. Of course, you’ll need to have means to start a fire unless you’re into sushi!

#11 Stone Stacking

This is the art of balancing rocks which requires great concentration, patience and lots of discipline. The secret is to find combinations of rocks or stones balance on each other in seemingly impossible ways. Wires or any kind of support is strictly forbidden. You’ll certainly have plenty of time to master this difficult art form.

#12 Hut Building

What could be more fun than designing your own abode and having to hunt for the perfect resources to build it. Don’t think of it as a chore but as an ideal opportunity to have a pad exactly as you want it. So, your décor choices might be a little limited but if you’ve ever desired to be more creative then now is your chance.

#13 Play on a Games Console

If we’ve could use a solar-powered music player then why not say we can have a games console too? The question then becomes, if you could take any game with you to a desert island, what would it be? The best choice has to be Tetris due to its infinite playing options.

#14 Become a Fashion Designer

Yes, you could become your island’s one and only voice on all things fashion! Create some attractive shell necklaces and bracelets or design a skirt out of leaves. Fashion yourself some island-style shoes or some interesting headwear. The only limit is your imagination!

#15 Raft-building

Spend your time doing something useful that might just get you off this forsaken island. Gather driftwood and logs then scan the island for something to use as ties such as strong vines. A big palm leaf might work as a sail too!
