No money to travel? No time? No problem. You can still play tourist in your own backyard. Here are some tips on how to travel close to home.

Take a tour

See your city the way the tourists do by signing up for a local tour. Many major cities have hop on, hop off bus tours. While it might seem cheesy, these double decker bus tours are a great way to learn obscure facts and interesting anecdotes about your hometown. Plus, these tours stop at most major tourist destinations, so you don’t have to do much research ahead of time. All you have to do is get on the bus and see where it takes you! If you’re looking for something a little less touristy, local historical societies will often offer walking tours as well.

Try something new

Are there a few things that you’ve been meaning to do, but haven’t found the time? Trying something new can automatically put you in vacation mode. Whether its paddle boarding, going to a cooking class or checking out a cool museum, doing something unique will help you see your city in a whole new way. Plus, you’ll finally be able to cross some items off your bucket list!

Check out a community festival or event

Summer and fall are great times to be a tourist in your own city as major cities tend to have festivals or fairs happening most weekends. Check out local blogs and online events listings every Friday and find out what’s going on. Going to these events will give you exposure to communities and organizations in your city you never knew existed. For even more of a fish out of water experience, attend an event in a neighbourhood you don’t usually visit and experience part of your city might have previously ignored.

Break with your social routine

Do you usually go to the same restaurant or bar? Are you stuck in the same monotonous routine? Check out online user review sites such as Yelp to find a new restaurant or bar to check out. Not only will you be able to experience some new and different cuisine, but you’ll also become a much more informed local citizen in the process. The same goes with late night entertainment options. If you find yourself going to the same club all the time, try checking out a different venue. Sometimes it’s refreshing to break outside of your comfort zone.

Check into a hotel

Sometimes all you need is a break. Go away without actually going away by spending a weekend at a high-end hotel or resort in your city. Turn off your phone and enjoy some time without any obligations or routine. Treat yourself by relaxing at the spa, ordering room service and ordering fancy drinks at the bar. Alternatively, you can always rent a glamourous apartment or house through Airbnb and experience how someone else in your city lives.
